Story

Readers enjoy an issue of NYRA.

Our last launch party, where attendees talked, ate, drank, and read the issue, because our people are cool like that. Angelina Torre

New York Review of Architecture (NYRA) reviews architecture in New York. Founded in 2019 by architects as a simple broadsheet, it has grown into a robust magazine now commissioning some of the best writers in New York. They range from established voices such as Christopher Hawthorne, Thomas de Monchaux, and Karrie Jacobs to up and coming talents such as Jael Goldfine, Greta Rainbow, and A. V. Marraccini. Recent pieces include a magnum opus by Samuel Stein on social housing, a reported piece on student debt in architecture by Anjulie Rao, an interview with John Wilson (of How To With John Wilson) by Eric Schwartau, and a rather contrarian case to save Penn Station. Through all the pieces, NYRA treats buildings as cultural artifacts whose stories are as important as a piece of art, a book, a film, or a play to understanding the world we inhabit.

Our readers appear to enjoy the pieces:

"The only print publication I look forward to receiving in the mail."
—Kate Wagner
"I feel like I am reading a cross between classic 1970s Chicago Reader, 1980s Village Voice, and 1990s New York Review of Books or the New Yorker. The tone throughout is fun, the text always insightful. I am frequently blown away by how the quality remains at such a high level from front to back. Reading the print edition for me is like listening to J.S. Bach or sipping espresso—it's something I make time for and savor."
—Randy Deutsch
"Restored my faith in the future of both good journalism and the younger generation."
—James Wines
"I love everything about NYRA except the backward leaning italics."
—Paul Goldberger

We have also been written up by Azure Magazine, the LA Times, and been featured on the podcast Stack.

Do not just take their word for it. Read NYRA yourself. You can find the magazine right here on our website and on platforms such as instagram and bluesky. But while the internet is great, NYRA’s favorite platform are its bimonthly print issues, which have a circulation of 7500, including more than 2600 print subscribers, another 1500 institutional readers, and a network of stockists across the United States and Europe. Its readers also gather in person. In fact, NYRA hosts a launch party for every issue - more than 400 attended the most recent one.
