Rising above public housing blocks, 225 Cherry Street would look like any other unremarkable ultraluxe high-rise were it not for the cheese grater–like pattern of its glass paneling. The site on which the skyscraper now stands used to be home to a Pathmark supermarket, a crucial neighborhood food source. But forces of community preservation could not ward off the construction of the tower. It’s the world’s largest râpe à fromage, mocking families who just want to buy milk.
