Unorthodox, Netflix, March 2020, 4 episodes
These times have driven even the Review onto Netflix—specifically, the new mini-series Unorthodox. When protagonist Esty Shapiro flees her Ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in Williamsburg for Berlin, she finds her unconventional mother in an apartment building designed by unorthodox architects: Hinrich & Doris Baller, whose lyrical, vaulted compositions march to the beat of their own proverbial. Born in 1936 to an architect and a pianist, Hinrich once told the magazine Numéro he would have nothing to do with heroic architecture—heroics are for Speer, and “there are no heroes in music.” Five stars.
